The school’s ambition is that every boy will reach his full sporting potential, learn essential life skills through sport, and that he finds an interest that stays with him well beyond his school years.

Sport at FBS encapsulates the school’s ethos. It caters for boys of all abilities, promotes the Christian value of grace - both win and lose in a gracious way - and endeavours to make all boys hardworking and resilient. Each of our four core sports is coached by local professional sports organisations, successfully developing strength and depth of squads across each year group. We aim to field A-C teams for all core sports, with competitive fixtures against other schools and in local leagues. Our rugby teams have won the Middlesex final at Allianz Park, our football teams have won the league final at Loftus Road, our rowing squads have competed at Dorney Lake and triumphed in the London Youth games in heads and regattas up and down the Thames.

thE core sports played at fbs are:

  • Rugby Union (Autumn Term)
  • Football (Spring Term)
  • Cricket (Summer Term)
  • Rowing

In addition, boys have the opportunity to take part in a range of other sports as part of their timetabled P.E lessons, or in co-curricular time, including:

  • Tennis
  • Swimming
  • Athletics
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Judo
  • Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
  • Badminton
  • Fitness
  • Running
  • Cycling

PE CURRICULUM

The PE department recognises that there are four separate categories that the high quality programme at Fulham Boys School (FBS) can offer; PE Lessons, Games Lessons, Competitive Sports and Co-curricular Sports. These separate categories will enable sport to be freely available to all boys that attend the school; it will push those that are talented and encourage those who are less able. All pupils are entitled to benefit from high quality PE provision and there is significant evidence to show that this supports other learning right across the curriculum.
PE also contributes to healthy and active lifestyles, improves emotional well-being, reduces poor behaviour, increases attendance and develops key skills such as leadership, confidence, social and team building skills. Our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils develop the fundamental skills and competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing a broad and balanced curriculum with opportunities for all to enjoy.
A high quality PE curriculum will develop physical literacy and will allow pupils to learn about themselves, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, self-expression and concepts such as fair play and respect. It also contributes to the development of a range of important cognitive skills such as decision making and analysis, and social skills such as teamwork and communication. These skills are transitional between the key stages; from core PE in KS3 to A Level and BTEC at KS5.

HOUSE COMPETITIONS

All pupils and staff are allocated to one of four houses:
Brunel, Wilberforce, Liddell, Dickens. House competitions are held throughout the year in a variety of sports and all pupils are encouraged to represent their house in Sports day. The house system encourages pupils to interact positively with their peers within a competitive context; thus promoting fair play, co-operation, social interaction and the further development and application of physical skills.

TALENTED ATHLETE PROGRAMME

Each new season/academic year eight boys from each Year Group are selected for the Talented Athletes programme in line with their sporting talent, potential and achievements to date. In the Talented Athlete group, the boys will be invited to attend workshops, lectures and events that aim to introduce them to individuals from the professional sporting world, giving them a taste of what it takes to potentially become a professional sportsman. In these half termly sessions, the boys will have the opportunity to meet sports psychologists, sports nutritionists, professional sportsmen and women, sports scientists/medics, strength and conditioning coaches and become more familiar with the exciting challenges and demands the professional sporting world can offer. From this, boys in the group will be given additional responsibility and are expected to lead by example in PE, at sports afternoon and at sports fixtures, modelling the attitude and behaviours we would expect from elite athletes, encouraging all other pupils to do the same.
